The concert-experience film shot ‘entirely’ in 3D begins with a mesmerizing 3D Jonas Bros logo that then zips into a 4:31 am wake-up call from bodyguard/handler Big Rob in a hotel suite in Manhattan the morning of the Virgin Megastore release party for the “Burning Up” CD. Big Rob has to deal with each brother in succession from Kevin to Nick to finally Joe, who really, really doesn’t wan to get up. Next, the bros have a catered breakfast as Kevin tries to rattle off the day’s schedule from what looks like a Blackberry. Joe, of course, is more interested in breakfast and the girl serving it. She’s a little too interested in Joe and ends up getting asked to leave as she appears to be spying. This then leads to a scene of them stuck in traffic trying to get to “Good Morning, America”. Next thing you know, their car is engulfed by screaming fans, all too common throughout the film, they are abandoning the car Joe put on his credit card, escaping via the sun roof, and running through the streets of New York en route to a helicopter get-away. More 3D graphics are used to power the opening credits and the names of each Jonas Brother. The rest of the film is cuts to their day in New York scattered with performances for their concert at Madison Square Garden with guest performances from Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift.
If you’ve not seen the guys in concert, this was the next best thing, and there’s no doubt they know how to work an arena of screaming girls for all it’s worth. The film shows them performing most of their top hits. Supposedly there was new music only from the movie. Not sure what that was, please post comment below since there are obviously bigger Jonas Bros fans out there who will know instantly. I downloaded their album from iTunes™ and didn’t really notice what was not in the movie. They did no perform the Year 3000 which was my first JoBro song, and that was disappointing, sort of. The arena set was awesome, full of tricks and pyrotechnics. Apparently, director Bruce Hendricks learned from his Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour film that those darned red/green/blue light sticks look cool on 3D film so everyone in the world seemed to have one in this film, and it was a tad annoying and didn’t really fit with the Jonas Bros style.
...the movie is not as good as most of their videos....
The film would have been stronger from a concert perspective had they filmed more songs. Yeah, that’s right.
When it comes to the film as a whole, there was way, way, way, way, way, way too much footage of screaming girls running here and there trying to do anything possible to touch a Jonas Brother. This was cool in the opening to sort of give a taste of their lives, which must be pretty unreal despite it being real. However, it quickly grew worse than boring. Cut that junk and put in two more songs. Oh, and if there’s a person alive who thought the video in Central Park with the scenes of ‘lovebirds’ walking about wasn’t a better candidate for a Kraft® CHEESE and Macaroni commercial than it was a cool part of this film, let their voices be heard below. Sorry, but this part gave me the creeps worse than watching footage of the Carpenters on late night TV. Again, cut that and put in more concert. These guys are stage showman. Let’s see the show. Of course, a little more of what went on in the day other than watching them go in and out of places mobbed by girls would have been more interesting as well. The breakfast scene was the most enlightening of the film. How do their dinners work out? Does Joe do the earthquake routine at every meal?
As for the 3D effects? Well, they weren’t totally wasted, there was a scene where some birds flew out at you.
These guys are being compared to the Beatles, more so for their impact on hordes of girls I suspect than their actual music, so let’s see more of them and less of the crowd. The funniest part, though, had to be a group of guys who have decided to become the fake Jonas Bros. Hey, if it were the only way to get a girl to notice you do it. Probably a lot of girls would rather have a faux JoBro than no JoBro. Overall, the movie is not as good as most of their videos and certainly not as great as it could have been.
